Malnourished children cases rise in Tarkwa

Tarkwa (W/R), Jan. 7, GNA - Malnutrition is said to be on the increase among children under five years in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality. The disease is due to poor diet, lack of adequate breastfeeding and insufficient vitamins in the body.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on the issue, Reverend Joseph Djumour, Municipal Nutritionist at the Tarkwa Government Hospital said some parents have given a closed-mind mentality to nutrition advices given to them at the medical centres.

He noted that some children, less than six months old were now being diagnosed of anaemia because their mothers have refused to comply with the six month exclusive breast feeding recommendations by the hospitals.

According to Rev. Djumour the neglect could result in upper respiratory infections, chest pains, frequent catarrh and weak body tissues. He, therefore, appealed to expectant and nursing mothers to desist from any unprofessional health advice that could have negative impact on their babies. 7 Jan. 09
