Legon Students Agitated

...Over 30% Rebate on AFUF

About three thousand students of the University of Ghana have still not been paid the 30% rebate on both academic and facility user fees, even though Government has released the money out three months ago.

With only 10 days to go to the end of the university academic year for 2001/2002, agitation is mounting among the aggrieved students.

Chronicle has learnt that the first disbursement of the rebate was done on the eve of the Easter celebrations in March, this year.

However, only a section of the students were covered, Chronicle gathered.

The authorities responsible for the disbursement of the rebate demanded that the other students give them a leeway.

This, according to the authorities, will make it feasible for them to rectify some discrepancies embedded in the students' particulars.

The students, albeit embittered, acceded to the authorities' demands with the belief that things would be well as was promised.

They went to the Accounts Office the following week to reclaim their money but to their chagrin the authorities postponed the date.

What compounded their nightmarish experience was the authorities inability to give them any tentative date, Chronicle learnt.

The aggrieved students were therefore left wandering from their halls to the Accounts Office every now and then.

The Students Representative Council (SRC) President, Mr. Anyimah Ackah Ekpor, told Chronicle that his office is continuously inundated with a plethora of complaints from the disillusioned students.

He intimated that they did not take any radical action on the matter because mounting pressures of examination distract them.

The Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Council for Tertiary Institution (NCTE), Alhaji Salifu Seidu, told Chronicle that his outfit has since last three months issued the university with a cheque covering the rebate.

The Registrar of the university, Mr. A. Teddy Konu, insisted that every student had received his rebate.

He, however, said the issue of rebate is outside the purview of his responsibility.
