Kufuor arrives in Lisbon

From Kwaku Osei Bonsu, GNA Special Correspondent, Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, Dec. 7 GNA - President John Agyekum Kufour, Chairman of the African Union (AU), on Monday morning arrived in the Portuguese Capital, Lisbon, ahead of the historic two-day European Union (EU) Africa summit. He was accompanied by senior Government officials.

The main highlight of the Summit, which would open on Saturday, would be the launch of a new strategic partnership to deal with issues including development, good governance, peace and security, migration, energy and climate change.

All 53 Heads of State and Governments in Africa are expected to attend. President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, whose invitation generated so much row leading to the Summit boycott by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and Libyan Leader Mummar Gadaffi, were among the first African leaders to arrive.

The 37-member EU's annual Official Development Assistance of over 3 billion euros to Africa makes it the biggest donor.
