IGP attends human rights workshop

Nana Owusu-Nsiah, Inspector General of Police, on Thursday advised Senior Police Officers to exhibit professionalism by respecting the civil liberties of the citizenry as enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic.

"We need to create confidence to gain respect for the service that way crime combat would be easy."

Nana Owusu-Nsiah was speaking at the end of a two-day workshop for about 30 Senior Police Commanders and Scheduled Officers in Accra.

It was on the theme: "Contemporary Policing in Ghana, Human Rights and Good Governance in a Democratic Society."

He charged them to examine themselves as peace officers and act in a manner, which would ensure trust from all and sundry.

The IGP said the Police Administration had decided that community policing which involved local communities should be extended to the regions.

He noted that the unit would be directly involved in the day-to-day activities of the people and guide them on how to combat crime.

He urged the Officers to endeavour to exhibit that the Police were friends to the public and their role was to ensure their safety.

On the media, Nana Owusu-Nsiah called for cultivation of media support in all Police endeavours, adding; "constant interaction with the media was important".

Mr Patrick Kwesi Acheampong, Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, urged the officers to be circumspect in their dealings with the public.

He called for discipline in the ranks since it was a prerequisite in the maintenance of order.
