I don't need $10k to play for the Black Stars - Rahman

Black Stars defender, Abdul Baba Rahman has made a staunch defence against the perceived lack of commitment by members of the national team, insisting they do not play for money.

Members of the Black Stars have courted disaffection by the public because of huge sums of money given to them as bonuses for winning qualification matches and their failure to win trophies.

The players, as a result, reached an agreement with the Ministry to have their winning bonuses slashed by 20 percent, which reduced it from $10.000 to $8,000.

However, the Chelsea man in an interview with GTV said the millionaire players of the national team do not need such monies to honour national assignments.

“I don’t need $10,000 to play for the nation. I play for the nation with my heart. And I know most of the players don’t play for Ghana because of $10,000.

“It is just an arrangement between the players and the management that we will give you this ($10,000) if you win. Me personally, I don’t need it.”

Rahman unlike most of his Black Stars teammates earns a bumper £76,000 per week at English giants, Chelsea.

The Black Stars are owed outstanding bonuses for their win over Mauritius in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
