Highway Robbers Identified

THE THREE suspected armed robbers, who were recently remanded in prison custody by the Mpraeso Circuit Court, have been identified as among the eight armed robbers who attacked and robbed some traders on the Kwahu Tafo-Nketepa road on April 19, this year.

The robbers allegedly collected several millions of cedis from the traders and other passengers, including the driver of the vehicle.

Abukari Sulley, the driver of KIA truck with registration number GR 2707Q, who identified the three alleged robbers at the Nkawkaw Central police station before they were taken to the Koforidua prison, told Chronicle that on that fateful day, he was conveying some traders and other passengers from Nkawkaw to Nketepa along the Afram lake.

He said upon reaching a portion of the road after Kwahu Tafo, he saw some people flashing a torchlight, waving for him to stop.

The driver said since the journey was in the night, he thought some drivers might have got a problem so he stopped.

According to him, as soon as he stopped, the robbers started firing warning shots and one of them shot at the vehicle's headlight, thus putting off the light.

After this, the robbers ordered all the passengers to surrender all their monies.

He said the robbers subjected those who refused to obey their orders to severe beatings and collected all the cash they had on them.

The driver said he lost over ?1.5 million while others lost between ?2 million to ?10 million.

According to him, he managed to sneak into the bush under the cover of darkness and stopped a vehicle which was heading for the spot and made a report to the Kwahu Tafo, Mpraeso and Nkawkaw police.

At the identification parade at the police station, the driver was able to identify the three suspected robbers among a number of suspects in the cells.

It would be recalled that the Mpraeso Circuit Court, presided over by Mr. Charles Gyau Asiedu, remanded the three in prison custody when they were arrested at Kwahu Tafo with locally manufactured pistols.

The police and the local people had a hectic time subduing them.

The police gave their names as Novito Klu (mason), Ibrahim Adjovi Mensah (fisherman) and Titi Adjovoe, also a fisherman.
