Grant must handle local Stars - Afriyie

Ghana Football Association executive committee member George Afriyie has backed the decision to hand the local Black Stars to coach Avram Grant after the team’s failure to qualify for the 2016 CHAN tournament in Rwanda.

The home-based Black Stars team suffered elimination at the hands of their Ivorian counterparts after losing on the away goal rule.

Ghana could not hold on to a 2-1 advantage in the first leg after falling at the Stade Robert Champoux in Abijan last Friday.

Many football fans had initially called on the Ghana Football Association to hand the home-based team to the Israeli trainer as practiced initially.

Former Black Stars coach Milovan Rajvac guided the local Black Stars to win silver in the maiden edition of the CHAN competition in Rwanda.

George Afriyie however believes the team must be coached by Avram Grant.

“Yes I think I should be so, we used to practice that and I think it would be advisable for us to go back. You remember in 2009 Milo handled both the local team and the Black Stars proper.”

“I was one of those who didn’t buy into the idea of Grant handling both teams. As the saying goes It is a “fool” who doesn’t change his mind, so I think those calling on that have a case.”

Ghana for the first time will not be participating in the competition for the first time having represented in the last three editions.
