The former Chelsea manager believes the Portuguese could salvage the situation of the Premier League defending champions

Ghana coach Avram Grant has backed Jose Mourinho to continue his reign as Chelsea manager despite the Blues’ faltering start to the season.

The London-based outfit have won just three of eleven Premier League games this term, and suffered their sixth defeat in a 3-1 loss to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

“It's one man's decision but if you ask me, I think Jose needs to continue with the job and solve the problem by himself,” Grant told the BBC Radio 5 Live's‘Sportsweek’.

“Sometimes when you are inside, you know the problem better than anybody.

“We know the past of Jose that he did so well for Chelsea, so he deserves more time.”

Grant replaced Mourinho in 2007 after the Portuguese’s first term with the Blues, and led the side to the 2008 Uefa Champions League final, losing to Manchester United on penalties.

Chelsea have, however, endured unarguably their most difficult season in recent times with defeats to Liverpool, West Ham, Southampton, Everton, Crystal Palace and Manchester City in the English topflight.

The club were also on Wednesday knocked out of the 2015 League Cup following a defeat to Stoke City on penalties after a 1-1 stalemate.

There have been several calls for the former Porto, Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss to given the boot, with reports of a mutiny and a lack of trust between Mourinho and the playing body.
