Give us commensurate remuneration, or we'll go on strike - POTAG

The National Secretariat of the Polytechnics Teachers Association (POTAG) on Friday, said the delay in reconstituting thePolytechnic Council was "suffocating" development in the various polytechnics and also affecting decision-making.

This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Godfried Gyawu-Nntow, President and Mr Peter Mark Apraku, Secretary.

The statement said as a matter of urgency, the government should "fashion out a way of establishing adequate and commensurate remuneration for polytechnic lecturers.

"If this is not done, POTAG would be compelled to begin an indefinite strike action by mid April this year."

It called on Parliament to legitimise representation of POTAG on the Polytechnic Council as an identifiable body.

It further said owing to the neglect and inaction on the part of some stakeholders, the Polytechnics had not been accorded their rightful positions in the tertiary education system.

"We have been marginalized for far too long, and we have had enough", the released added.

It said due to the low remuneration, neglect and sidelining of the Polytechnics, many qualified and professional lecturers were unwilling to work there.

The statement urged Ghanaians to refrain from trivializing and politicising the work of the National Reconciliation Commission, adding that its success or failure would have irreversible repercussions on the entire nation.

"Future generations will not forgive us if we bequeath to them a legacy of hidden war wrapped in a foil of peace," the statement added.
