Girls with hair cut, disincentive to economic growth – Kofi Akpaloo

The Flag bearer of the Independence Peoples Party (IPP) Percival Kofi Akpaloo has expressed strong reservations about parents and schools that insist that school girls cut their hair short.

The presidential hopeful contends the phenomenon stifles a critical supply chain in the hairdressing industry ultimately leading to a loss of economic livelihoods for many.

Speaking on Ultimate FM’s late evening political show Fact File, Mr. Akpaloo told host Julius Caesar Anadem that, “if you allow the girls to do their hair, it will create jobs in many ways.”

Justifying his point, he explained, “Somebody is going to do the touching if the person is going to perm the hair and you will need to buy cream. You also need to buy ribbons to decorate it to make it nice. At the same time, you will need to get another cream that you will be using to always straighten and another one to maintain it on a daily basis.”

“All this will help someone get a job to do because they will be maintaining it every now and then and this will make the economy grow,” he propounded.

Discouraging haircuts, he indicated that when one cuts the hair it will take about three months before she goes back and “that’s why in Europe and America, we don’t run a communist system where everybody will cut her hair before going to school. That’s not right”

The Ireland-based accountant, who failed to win the Manhyia parliamentary seat in the year 2004, also failed to make any showing in the 2012 elections when he stood as an independent candidate on the ticket of the IPP.

He is, however, hopeful of shocking Ghanaians with what he calls a Leicester City premier league championship style victory in this year’s national elections.
