Ghanaians in California Donate to Ministry of Health

The Ghana Association of Southern California presented hospital supplies and equipment to the Ministry of Health (MOH), in Accra last week.

The donation worth about $300,000 included blankets, syringes and crutches and would be shared between Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra and Okomfo Anokye Hospital in Kumasi. They were donated by a hospital and philanthropic organisations in Los Angeles.

Presenting them to the Minister of Health, Dr. Kweku Afriyie, Mr. Joe Yaw Manu, executive member of the association said the gesture was borne out of the Homecoming Summit held last year.

"The purpose of the organisation is to promote the heritage and culture of Ghana, enhance our lives in the USA and also contribute to the social, economic and technological advancement of Ghana," he said, and promised that more things would be brought in to help develop the nation.

"With the cooperation of the government of Ghana, the current executive of the Ghana Association of Southern California is committed to bringing home more needed health, educational and environmental resources to help the people of Ghana," Mr. Manu said.

Dr. Kweku Afriyie expressed his gratitude for the presentation and said he would make sure they get to the hospitals.

He said the Ministry recently undertook a tour of almost all the hospitals in the country and realised that Ghana has a long way to go to solve our hospitals' problems. He said aid would be sent to those in the remote districts of Ghana since they are in dire need.

The Minister called for communication between Ghanaians abroad and the government to assist the country.

The association has also donated 800 T-shirts worth $4000, to the Black Queens of Ghana, to supplement government's effort at enhancing women soccer in Ghana.

Mr. Kofi Nsiah, General Secretary of Ghana Football Association received the gift on behalf of the Black Queens.
