Ghana's Indebtedness

Ghana's total official external debt including obligations to the International Monetary Fund as at end of last year was estimated at 5,001.08m dollars, according to GBC Radio. Of this amount, short-term debt was put at 267.6m dollars, while medium-term debt amounted to 1,191.01m dollars. Obligations to the IMF under medium-term facilities like structural adjustment, enhanced structural adjustment, trust fund loans, and others were estimated at 700.3m dollars.

Estimated long-term debt as the end of last year was put at 3,542.47m dollars, of which debt to bilateral institutions was 922.99m dollars, and those to multilateral institutions put at 2,619.48m dollars. The domestic debt, on the other hand, stood at 531.1bn cedis. During the period under review, there were virtually no transactions on the bilateral account. The outstanding amount in Ghana's favour amounted to 17.57m dollars as against 17.82m dollars in the previous quarter. The 25m-dollar decrease followed a revaluation in the accounts with Cuba.
