Ghana Re-Affirms Support For ECOMOG Actions In Freetown

DAKAR, Senegal, 4 June Ghana has re-affirmed its total commitment to the operation by the West African Peacekeeping force, Ecomog, to restore the overthrown democratic government of Sierra Leone back to power.

An Ecomog news release reaching PANA in Dakar on Tuesday said this was said by a Ghanaian government delegation that visited the peacekeeping force's high command in Monrovia, the Liberian capital.

The delegation, headed by Ghana's foreign minster, Victor Gbeho, gave the assurance during a courtesy call on the Ecomog force commander, Maj. Gen. Samuel Victor Malu.

Gbeho said that Ghana was committed to the Ecowas operation in Sierra Leone and was already deploying troops to enhance the Ecowas forces already stationed in Freetown.

We are committed to it the minister said, adding, by mid-day tomorrow all our troops earmarked for Sierra Leone would be on ground there .

Minister Gbeho said Ghana had no doubt that the objective of peace and democracy would be achieved in Sierra Leone especially with the current dynamic of Ecomog under Maj. Gen Victor Malu.

In as much as this (Sierra Leone) is an extension of Ecomog, we are part of the operations and will remain part of it, Gbeho declared.

Responding, the Ecomog boss restated his total support for the recent statement of the Ecowas chairman and Nigerian head of state, Gen. Sani Abacha that Ecomog should become a permanent military command of the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) that could be used at any time to curb threats to sub-regional peace. PANA
