Ghana Library Board embarks on mobile library project

Koforidua, July 28, GNA- The Ghana Library Board has embarked on a mobile library project, to give access to children in rural and remote areas in Atiwa and the Kwahu North districts in the Eastern Region. The vans were targeting mainly communities where there are no static library facilities. Mr Guy Amarteifio, Regional Librarian, made this known when a US-based Ghanaian family who hails from Koforidua donated shelves, tables and notice boards at a cost of 4,000 dollars to the Regional Library in Koforidua.

He said the regional library, which was supposed to be the pillar of education had no facilities such as projectors and furniture to meet the benchmark. Mr Amarteifio therefore appealed to public-spirited individuals and organisations to support the growth of libraries since it was the bedrock of education.

He thanked Professor Kwamena Panford, who made the donation on behalf of the family, for the kind gesture. Prof. Panford said the family decided to channel the funeral expenses of their parents into a more viable venture that would benefit society. He said in that direction they had established the Panford Foundation with seed money of 10,000 dollars, to sponsor the education of needy children from the New Juaben Municipality where they grew up and benefited from the benevolence of others.

Prof Panford said in recognition of what the society had contributed towards their success in life as far as education was concerned, they organised a low key funeral for their parents and had since channelled all donations they received for the event into charity. The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Alex Asamoah who received the items, thanked the donors for the gesture, adding that because of the world economic crunch, government had cut down on expenditure, which was affecting all sectors of development. He said the items had therefore come at the right time.
