German team in Ghana to discuss illegal immigrants

ACCRA, July 5 (Reuters) - A German parliamentary delegation met Ghanaian officials on Monday to discuss ways of identifying and dealing with illegal immigrants in Germany.

``Germany has identified 50,000 illegal immigrants, most of whom claim to be Ghanaians,'' Peter Euders, head of the German parliamentary committee on internal affairs, said at a meeting attended by Ghana's interior minister, Nii Okaija Adamafio.

``Efforts to cooperate with the Ghanaian and other embassies in Germany to reveal the true identity of the illegal immigrants have so far proved futile. This has necessitated our tour of the countries whose nationals are guilty of the offence,'' Euders added.

Adamafio promised that the Ghanaian government would do everything it could to help and called on the German government to support its security and law enforcement agencies.
