Free Eye Screening, Surgery In Upper Denkyira

Raleigh International, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), is to administer free eye treatment to people with associated eye troubles in Upper Denkyira, and four other districts, starting from 15th February to 7th March, this year.

The other four communities include Ashanti, Wassa, Adansi and Twifo- Hemang (Lower Denkyira) traditional areas.

The exercise would be executed principally by volunteers from Britain and the European Union and patients would be referred after examination to hospitals for the administering of medicines.

This was noted in a letter signed by the District Co-ordinating Director of the Upper Denkyira District, Mr. Louise K. Bayouh, dated February 5, 2001. which, however, made it clear that patients have to pay their own medical bills on medicines and lenses obtained at the hospitals.

Mr. Bayouh therefore urged communities to take the golden opportunity seriously for "blindness is next to hell", he cautioned.

The eye camp with the assistance of Ghanaian eye specialists and nurses after a day's training workshop of four teams have forty-eight communities to cover.

They are Buabinso, Kyekyewere, Nkroful, Diaso, Ayanfuri, Oponso, Dunkwa, Sobroso, Imrain, Akropong, Anwiawia, Denkyira Obuasi, Domiansi, Asikuma, Buabin, Polukrom, Awisem, Asma-camp, Jameso Nkwanta and Maudaso.

Others include Nkotomso, Subin, Berwdie, Akropong Wasa, Bogoso, Adanso, Amanchem, Akrokeri, Obuasi, Jappa, Nanankoh, Wasa Saah, Twepease, Ashanti Bekwai, Nyinawusu, Betinase, Ntom, Agona Twifo, Mintaso, Kotochi, Kwanshie, and Awie,.

The rest comprised Ayaase, Wamaso, Nsuaem, Essaman and Adansi Fomena.

The medical team was scheduled for departure on March 7, 2001.
