Former Member of Council of State dies

Kade (E/R,) Feb. 21, GNA - The death is announced of Mrs Mercy Owusu-Nimo, a former Member of the Council of State at Kade in the Eastern Region. She died at the Saint Dominic Hospital at Akwatia after a protracted illness at the age of 76.

Mrs Owusu-Nimo served for a period as Kwaebibirem District Secretary and then acting District Chief Executive (DCE), becoming a Member of Counci= l of State from 1997 to 2001.

A founding member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mrs Owusu-Nimo and her husband, Mr Kwabena Owusu-Nimo were responsible for the formation and organisation of the NDC in the Kwaebibirem District. She stood on the ticket of the NDC in the parliamentary election in 1996 but lost.

The late Mrs Mercy Owusu- Nimo was educated at the Abuakwa College at Kyebi, Holy Child College, Cape Coast and the University of Hull where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Economics and a Diploma in Librarianship. For years she worked with the Accra Central Library and the National Investment Bank before leaving public service to establish a preparatory school at Kade among other places.

While on a sick bed a few months ago, Mrs Owusu-Nimo received an award of 93Okyeman kanea" (light of Okyeman) for her distinguish service to Ab= uakwa State from the Okyehene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II. She left behind a husband and five children.
