Former MP's Girlfriend In Court

An Accra Fast Track High has began hearing the case in which the girlfriend of a former Member of Parliament and two men have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime, robbery and causing harm.

Nerteley Nertey Yirenkyiwa, the 26 year old girlfriend of the former MP, J.B. Danquah, Charles Antwi and Nana Yaw Ampong, all pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded into police custody to re-appear on November 23.

Led in evidence by a State Attorney, Donimic Bakoma, Mr. Danquah who is the first prosecution witness said he received a phone call from Yirenkyiwa on August 25, 2010, that she needed some financial assistance.

Based on the phone call, he said he assured Yirenkyiwaa that he would come over to see her the following day. He said Yirenkyiwaa, who is also called Kimmy, called him again in the morning of August 26, to confirm whether he would come to which he responded in the affirmative.

At about 9:30 p.m. on that day, he said he proceeded to the apartment of the accused at East Legon in Accra and met her outside the apartment and they both went into the living room. After sitting in the room for a while, Yirenkyiwaa suggested that they should go to be bedroom to relax since she was not feeling very well to which he obliged.

He said Yirenkyiwaa took off his shirt on the way to the bedroom and unzipped his trousers when they got there. Just as the trousers fell, he said the door to the bathroom opened with Antwi and Ampong coming out of there.

As he tried to grab his trousers to cover his nakedness, he said Yirenkyiwaa pushed him onto the bed with the assistance of the two men. As he struggled with them, he said Yirenkyiwaa rushed out of the room and brought knives, a big cellotape and a rope, gave one of the knives to Antwi and the cello tape to Ampong. He said he hit Antwi with his foot as Ampong tried to cello tape his mouth. He said Yirenkyiwaa who was also holding one of the knives then told him to co-operate or would regret the consequences.

Mr. Danquah said he then saw Antwi holding the knife towards his head and as he tried to protect his head with his hand the knife pieced through his wrist which made him to shout for help.

“As I kept on shouting, I managed to get near to a window through which I shouted more for help. At that point I saw the men and the lady running out of the room.” “I just run past her through the door and to the main entrance along the stairs bleeding and screaming for help until I got downstairs where a crowd and security guards at the apartment had arrested Ampong,” he said.

Wearing only a boxer short, he said, Yirenkyiwaa came down and told the security men to rather arrest him but the police arrived and took all of them away excluding Ampong who had then fled. He said he was taken to a medical centre where he was given first aid and referred to the 37 Military Hospital.

At the 37 Military Hospital, he said he was given two pints of blood before being referred to the Plastic and Reconstructive Centre of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) where he underwent a five-hour reconstructive plastic surgery.

He said he spent five days at KBTH after which he had to go for a review at the Hand and Risk Unit of the Leicester hospital in London where he further underwent another surgery and a transplant.

During cross-examination by the defence counsel Addo Atuah, Mr. Danquah admitted that Yirenkyiwaa was his girlfriend with whom he had had an amorous relationship.
