Flooding causes damage at Breman-New York

Kumasi, Sept 5, GNA - More than 100 people have been displaced and property running into several hundreds of millions of cedis destroyed at Breman-New York, a suburb of Kumasi following a downpour.

The rain, which started some few minutes before midnight on Saturday subsided after 0600 hours on Sunday.

In all, 15 houses and three vehicles were submerged, but there were no casualties.

Other items destroyed included various electrical gadgets like television sets, music systems, fridges and deep-freezers as well as furniture and mattresses.

Mr Godfred Asamoah-Darko, spokesman of the victims, blamed the flooding on the narrow bridge spanning the 'Benkumfour' stream on the Offinso-Kumasi road that runs through the area.

He appealed to the authorities to act quickly to expand the bridge to curb flooding in the area whenever it rained and the dredging of the stream.
