Fishmonger gives birth to Siamese twins

Saltpond, (C/R), Oct. 21, GNA - A twenty-five year old fishmonger from Kormantse near Saltpond, Miss Elizabeth Sarbah alias Maame Nyaaba, on Monday gave birth to Siamese twins at Saltpond Government Hospital. The babies, the third born of Maame Nyaaba were joined at the stomach, had three legs and one anus.

Speaking to Ghana News Agency shortly after delivery, Miss Nyaaba expressed gratitude to God for making it possible for her to deliver them the normal way without going through cesarean session. She appealed to donor agencies and the general public to donate money for the separation of the babies.

Dr. Frederick Vormawor, the Medical Superintendent, commenting on the delivery said, when there was a problem with the development of the foetus some parts got fused leading to Siamese twins.

He said, when such a thing occured it was the medical experts who had to rectify it and cautioned against infusing superstition into it. Miss Dorothy Dakpo, a Nursing Officer in-charge of the Maternity Ward at the time of the delivery commended the midwives who assisted her for their bravery and good sense of judgement.

The babies have been referred to Korle Bu Hospital for further attention.
