Ex-Detainees Ask For Compensation

Accra - A group of ex-political detainees calling itself "The Peace Seekers", has called on the government to compensate all persons who suffered detention under the PNDC revolutionary era.

In a petition to the government, the group said many of the victims were not tried, they lost their jobs and they suffered emotionally and in some cases physically in the prisons. Their fundamental human rights as human beings and citizens were violated.

The petition, signed by Alex Addo, Vice President of The Peace Seekers, said since their abrupt release, most of them have not been able to come to terms with social and emotional rehabilitation. The compensation will therefore "enable us to rise up from our distorted life situations and make our lives worth living again."
