The Police Hospital in Accra has asked holidaymakers to exercise caution during the Christmas season as they throng the various beaches and water bodies across the country to have fun to avoid being drown.

It observed the rate of drowning fatalities during festivities and recreational events have been alarming.

Statistics from the Hospital’s Pathology Department alone showed 68 persons drowned in 2017 while from January to November 2018, a total of 48 cases of drowning have been recorded.

Consequently, it has advised persons who may be swimming at the various beaches and water bodies to avoid any act that will put their lives in danger.

“Parents, chaperons and heads of educational institutions are therefore being encouraged to educate their wards on the dangers associated with water bodies,” a statement from the Hospital advised.

Also, households should ensure their water receptacles are properly closed to protect their children from falling into them.

Road fatalities

Meanwhile, the Hospital is also urging Ghanaians to be cuatios on the country’s roads to avoid road traffic accidents.

Road traffic accident records at Pathology Department indicated193 fatalities were recorded in 2017 and 184 fatalities this year.

It said 13 persons who were victims of pedestrian knock-downs could not be identified.

“Members of the public are therefore encouraged to always be in possession of their personal identification cards to help Police and respondents easily identify them in the event of any accident or health challenges,” it advised.

It identified were Abeka, Adenta, Airport, Amasaman, Legon, Madina, Nima, Tesano and Weija as the most prone knockdown areas in Accra.

It has thus advised drivers be careful on these highways and major roads and drive according to the approved speed limits to help reduce road fatalities.

The Police Hospital also asked pedestrians to wear bright colours or reflectors during the night to prompt drivers of their presence.

“It is also hoped that organizers of beach parties and other entertainment events especially near water bodies and road sides provide the needed security and create the necessary awareness amongst revelers to make the forth coming Yuletide drowning and accident free,”.
