Don't corrupt heads of educational institutions

Accra, Nov.12 GNA- Mr. Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, on Wednesday asked Ghanaians to stop influencing authorities of educational institutions in return for favours. He said when authorities of institutions were allowed to take decisions based on performance and merit, it would compel students to work hard, be innovative and resourceful to meet the standards required for admissions

Mr Baah-Wiredu, who was launching the International Campaign for Corruption-Free Schools in Accra, commended the churches in their efforts to curb corruption.

The campaign under the theme, "Build Corruption-Free Schools for a Happy Nation" was being organised by the Fellowship of Christian Councils and Churches in West Africa (FECCIWA).

It is in response to the African Union (AU) call for countries and the ecumenical bodies to fight indiscipline and corruption. The Minister said churches had played immense role in the socio-economic development health and education.

"This new dimension of the churches to form a common network to campaign and raise awareness to eradicate corruption in schools is a laudable idea", he said.

Mr Baah-Wiredu said indiscipline and corruption had effect on the country's development and appealed to Ghanaians to assist in curbing them in the society.

Baffuor Dokyi Amoa, Secretary General of FECCIWA said it was aimed at eradicating or minimizing corruption in schools and raise public awareness through campaign in schools through such activities as debates, talks and conferences.

The target groups are school authorities, heads of educational institutions, teachers, students, pupils and parents.
