Court jails labourer four years for stealing mattresses and phones

The Akim Swedru Circuit Court has sentenced Issah Shaibu, a labourer, to a four-year prison term for conspiracy, unlawful entry and stealing mattresses and mobile phones.

His accomplices Kwame Ofori and Bobo are on the run.

Two other persons, Issifu Shaibu and Ayishatu Mohammed have been charged with dishonestly receiving and possession of stolen items and were admitted to bail in the sum of GHc1, 000 with one surety each.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Kingsley Kwaku Antwi said Mr Emmanuel Owusu, a trader also the complainant lives at Akim Oda with the accused persons and the convict.

He stated that on December 12, 2012 Mr Owusu went to his shop and detected that someone had broken into his shop and stolen eight high density mattresses and assorted mobile phones all worth GHc3, 045.00.

The prosecutor said Mr Owusu reported the matter to the Police and on January 30, this year he had a tip-off that some stolen items were with Issah Shaibu and alerted the Police who caused his (convict) arrest.

When the convict’s room was searched by the Police five mattresses and a mobile phone were retrieved and during interrogation mentioned Kwame Ofori and Bobo as the accomplices who sold 10 phones to Issifu Shaibu.

Chief Inspector Antwi said Mohammed was entangled with the case and when a search was conducted one mobile phone was retrieved from her.
