Committe Set To Probe Mystery Of $46,000

A three- member committee headed by Commissioner of Police in charge of Legal and Prosecutions, Sam Awortwi, has been established to probe the loss of 46,000 dollars meant for the payment of players' bonuses.

Other members of the committee are Superintendent Nene Sasraku, Chief Internal Auditor of the police administration and Superintendent S. Issaka of the Economic Crime Bureau. According to a Daily Graphic report, the committee will have an investigator to assist in building a docket for prosecution if the need arises.

The money, which was handed over to the former Youth and Sports Minister Mallam Yusif Issah, allegedly got missing from his suitcase.

Meanwhile the protocol officer of the Ministry of Youth and Sports who checked-in the suitcase at the airport still stands by his word that Mallam ordered that the money be removed from the case before it was sent to the airport. Mallam Issah has welcomed the probe insisting that he is innocent.

The president fired the Sports Minister after initial disagreements over his purported resignation. The former minister had denied an earlier statement by the government's spokesperson that he had resigned, saying that, leaving office without a probe into the case meant he was guilty.
