Cape Coast Market Women Want Market Completed Soon

Cape Coast (Central Region), 29 Oct. Market women and members of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) have asked the Cape Coast municipal assembly to ensure the completion of the multi-million-cedi market complex at Abura. The construction of the new market meant to ease congestion at the Kotokuraba market was abandoned about four years ago. They made the call when they met the Central Regional minister, Mr Kojo Yankah, who has assumed temporary responsibility for the municipality to discuss congestion and sanitation at market places, the urban three project and revenue collection. The women asked the assembly to prepare a temporary market place for them to enable the rehabilitation of the Kotokuraba market to begin. It was agreed that a daily toll of 200 cedis instead of 100 cedis each should be collected at the markets as from January and asked the assembly to provide refuse bins in and around the market. The market women agreed to organise themselves into associations to help make revenue collection easy for the assembly. Mr Yankah was not happy that the rehabilitation and other works to be carried out at the Kotokuraba and Kotoka markets have been delayed partly due to the inability of the assembly and the women to agree on a temporary market site. He said the assembly is to commission collectors to improve revenue collection in the municipality adding that a task force is to be formed to clear the pavements of unauthorised structures to ease congestion. The Regional Minister commended the women for agreeing to move from the market to enable the rehabilitation works to begin. He said the executive committee of the assembly will make a temporary site available for them as soon as possible.
