CPP condemns the public execution of Gaddafi

Appeal to National Transitional Council in Libya

The Convention People’s Party condemns the public brutalization and execution of Col. Muamar Al Gaddafi, as seen on television all over the world. This condemnation in no way questions the right of the people of Libya to choose their leaders nor the need for political reform in countries all over the world.

The role of UN-NATO intervention in Libya questions the credibility of global governance institutions such as the UN. We believe that a “no-fly zone over Libya” and “all necessary measures” to protect civilians did not protect civilians in Libya. Also the African Union’s proposal on the Libyan crisis should have been seriously considered. This would have created the possibility of dialogue and prevented the deaths of many Libyan citizens and averted the destruction of public infrastructure.

The events in Libya where the recommendations and authority of the AU was completely ignored requires that African Leaders reflect on the need to forge a stronger continental body. The circumstances in Libya clearly amounted to an invasion of a sovereign country and should not be glossed over. The question to which all African leaders must address themselves today is; who are the beneficiaries of the current situation in Libya?

Many in Africa will remember the late Brother Gaddafi for his efforts in forging greater political and economic integration in Africa. Similarly, Gaddafi’s investment in many sectors of the African economy will also be remembered.

We hope that the recognition by many African countries, including Ghana, of the National Transitional Council (NTC), would encourage them to honour the principles of justice and fairness. More importantly, we urge the NTC to stretch out a hand of conciliation and work towards uniting its entire people for the huge task of national reconstruction.

We mourn all the dead in the crisis and wish the Libyan people peace and reconciliation.
