CEPS official remanded for DUI

An Accra Circuit Court on Monday remanded into prison custody an officer of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) for reckless driving.

Eugene Roger Addy, who, under the influence of alcohol is alleged to have knocked down two pedestrians on the Kwashieman-Nyamekye road through reckless driving and failed to give aid to injured persons. The two victims, Kofi Amadu and Kofi Appiah, both 35, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. Appiah died on October 13, whiles on admission. Addy's plea was not taken.

Prosecution said since one of the victim is dead, it would forward the docket to the Attorney-General's Department for advice. The court, chaired by Mr Emmanuel Ankamah therefore, adjourned the case to Oct. 21.

Prosecuting Inspector Emmanuel Tawiah Boison told the court that on October 11, this year; at about 10:40pm Addy was driving a Ford Escort Saloon car from Kwashieman to Nyamekye Junction. At the Kata Hotel, Addy, who was speeding, knocked down the two victims, who sustained serious injuries and they were rushed to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for treatment. Prosecution said Addy sped off and failed to attend to the injured. He was apprehended by a group of people at the Fadama junction. A test conducted by the Police on Addy showed that there was 81 per cent alcohol in his breath.
