By-elections: Wulensi - March 4, Gomoa East - April 8

The Wulensi by-election will now take place on Tuesday, March 4. The by-election which was originally scheduled to take place on Thursday was postponed because Mr Samuel Nyimakan, who was disqualified from contesting elections in the constituency, filed for a review of the Supreme Court decision.

But the Supreme Court in a 6-1 majority decision on Tuesday, upheld its earlier decision to decline jurisdiction in the matter and awarded a cost of ?2.5 million against Mr Nyimakan. Seven people have filed nominations to contest the by-election.

In a related development, the EC has scheduled the Gomoa East constituency by-election for April 8, 2003 as a result of the death of Emmanuel Acheampong, MP for the area through a motor accident. The nominations of candidates shall take place March 11 and 12.

The Navrongo by-election has also been slated for March 25, following the death of the MP, John Achuliwor through a motor accident.
