Boakye-Djan Silent On Indemnity Clause -Kumbuor

Lawyer for former President Rawlings, Dr Benjamin Kumbuor has challenged Major (rtd) Kojo Boakye Djan, the number two man in the AFRC regime to lead the crusade to remove the transitional provisions in the 1992 Constitution that covers the AFRC period. This follows Boakye Djan’s assertion that Rawlings is a “walking criminal”.

“Why does Boakye-Djan not lead a crusade to remove the transitional provisions from the 1992 constitution? He has been silent on this matter because it protects him,” Dr Kumbuor said.

“When I listen to him, I realize that if he had been part of the PNDC, he will not have criticized that government”, he added.

Major (rtd) Boakye Djan told Kwaku Sakyi-Addo, host of JOY FM’s Front Page programme that Rawlings is a criminal for overthrowing the government of the People’s National Party (PNP) headed by the late President Hilla Limann.

But Dr Kumbuor told the “Independent” that “no court has convicted the former President of any crime so it is not right for Boakye-Djan to claim that he is a criminal”.

Asked if he was bothered by Boakye Djan calling Rawlings a “walking criminal”, Dr Kumbuor said “of course, we heard it in bits and in passing but we’ll listen to the full tape. It is an inappropriate word to use to describe the former President, considering the relationship that has existed between the two men, but I will be more interested in hearing Boakye-Djan on substantive matters”.

Asked if Rawlings will go to court on the accusation, Dr Kumbuor said “the former President is out of the country at the moment and in some of these instances, court actions require the presence and consent of a person, so until that is done, let us wait”.
