Binatone's Project Maji opens second rural water plant in C/R

Globally renowned appliances and electrical goods brand “Binatone”, a household brand best known for its Consumer Appliances, Cooling Technologies and Power Solutions came into existence 1958 in the United Kingdom with the desire to meet the modern lifestyle needs of customers with a sales and distribution network that span 4 continents and 75 countries

Binatone was amongst the first few brands to provide product warranties to its customers by recently providing a 2 year warranty on all its products as Ghana chosen as the first African market for the launch as the brand continues to celebrate its 40 years in Africa and 20 years in Ghana.

Recently, on 4th May, 2015 Binatone sponsored “Project Maji” in putting up a second rural water plant in the Central Region. This is the second sustainable rural water plant project launched in Antsenbua 2, a village under the Komenda District in the Central Region.

This follows the successful installation of the first plant in Atentan under the Assin Foso North district of the Central Region of Ghana on World Water Day. The Project MAJI team are excited to be in a position to liberate thousands of people from lack of proper drinking water.

The” Project MAJI” solution is a simple yet clever solution, using solar power to pump water from deep boreholes with no reliance on outside sources of power making this unit both independent and sustainable. Thus, the pump is powered by its own source of energy, unlike a hand pump. A “Project Maji” well can pump water from deeper sources, run the water through a filtration system and provide up to 10,000 litres of clean potable water to the people every day.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chief Executive Officer and founder of Project Maji Sunil Lalvani, explained the vision behind his project “We are excited to have undertaken this social responsibility project with the aim of liberating the communities from the scarcity of potable water and its associated diseases.”

He continued that “this venture started, after I read a couple of articles about water issues in Africa that enlightened and encouraged me by continuing to research more on the subject and became appalled by the injustice of Water Poverty .I became somewhat passionate to do something about it. Using my business background and experience in the electronics industry, it was relatively easy to put the knowhow together to create a sustainable potable water plant designed for villages.

What concerned me most during the research phase was the amount of hand pumps that had been deployed in villages that had been become dysfunctional during my visit to the community. I made it a core goal of “Project MAJI” not to only provide and install water plants, but also to maintain them.

Sustainability in all aspects is central to the Project MAJI mission he said. With great thanks to the sponsorship of Binatone, we now have two functional sites and have proven our concept so that we now look to rapidly scale up and deploy further afield … our goal is to serve 1 million people with fresh Project MAJI water.”

At the opening ceremony, the Managing Director of Binatone-Ghana , Mr.Venu Babu mentioned that” it is a great pleasure to sponsor these noble projects as part a of our corporate social responsibility”.

Mr. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, the Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural development was at the opening admiring the new facility. He praised the plant, the technology and the achievement and acknowledged the need for such interventions, especially in rural areas, and called for more Public Private Partnership appreciating that the government is unable to achieve that level of penetration on its own.

Dr. Stephen Nana Ato Arthur, member of parliament for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem(KEEA),the chief of the area as well as other officials who were present graced the occasion and thanked “Project Maji” and Binatone for this social project.

As the opening ceremony concluded, a ribbon was cut and the plant was declared open by the Deputy Minister. An orderly line quickly formed in front of this new impressive water facility ready to serve the people Antsenbua with clean drinkable water and changing their lives for the better.
