Avram Grant sponsors charity at Winneba

Foreign coaches of the Black Stars tend to fall into two categories. There are those such as the Claude Le Roy or Milovan Rajevac (Milo) who are praised almost from day one, their every gnomic utterance get treated with reverence and the nodding of heads; then there are the unfortunates such as Ratomir Djukovic (Doya) or Avram Grant, who get lampooned and lambasted from day one.

Avram Grant with a good work done so far for the Black Stars is unfortunate to fall into the last category. The former Chelsea boss has been here for just over a year but popular perception is his dislike for Ghana and disrespect for Ghanaians - i.e. after his verbatim at the press conference, a stand he probably took to swiftly protect his players over injury troubles.

However, the reality is different. In person, Avram Grant is entertaining, enthusiastic and charming with a tendency to put a kind arm around you when making a point. In contrast to Ghanaian’s other perception of dislike, he is openly refreshing about his interests outside Ghana football no wonder he is much into a charity work at Winneba.

Avram Grant has been working with TEN Charity which is headed by the hardworking head - Goni. The TEN Charity is a ten year project that looks to offer kids opportunity in three categories – education, agriculture and health.

First, Grant offered computers to boost the educational project. Second, the agricultural work sees to help the people to grow vegetables whilst the health deals with medication.

Meanwhile, Grant is as well investing in the construction of a school at Winneba. Through the help of the Winneba Chief, he is giving them the benefit of his experience: He is giving them his love for Ghana: He is giving them part of what he earns in Ghana.

Avram has respect for Ghana and Africa since, he narrowly escaped death in 2008 with his wife – Zofit and two kids on his charity work in Namibia. He was on the airport tarmac with his family to board a plane when a light aircraft crashed in close proximity to him. Avram likes to help people and see metamorphosis of their lives.

But for all his bonhomie, his satirical streak and his way with positive thoughts, the media still hold wrong perception about him. Seriously, the people of Winneba may be as much bemused as amused by the bad image the media tries to proclaim about Grant.

Maybe you may find it odd at first that he is giving up his time and love but you are right because Avram Grant is the first foreign coach to give back to Ghana. Therefore, his charity work must not go unnoticed.
