Attorney General Replies Andanis

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says attempts by some members of the Andani Family to associate the government with one faction in the Yendi crisis will not succeed. Describing the machinations as disappointing, he said instead of contributing to fostering a climate conducive to future peace and reconciliation, of the Dagbon Traditional Area, some people for their own ends, have chosen to continue to try and smear people in government with partisan brush which will undoubtedly fail.

Reacting to allegations that he has taken sides in the on-going investigations, Nana Akuffo Addo said it is clear to everybody who is prepared to be objective that government has acted properly as far as the Yendi crisis is concerned. “We have been even-handed in the way we have dealt with the crisis and will continue to do so. “This evidence, notwithstanding, some members of the Andani family try to paint the government with a partisan brush”.

On the allegation that he ordered the release of Yidana Sugri who was initially arrested by the police and charged with murder, Nana Akuffo Addo said the fundamental mandate of the Wuaku Commission is to identify the perpetuators and murderers in this heinous crime. He said the commission is still sitting and has not concluded its work and it will, therefore be completely prejudicial for someone to be prosecuted on a charge, which is the subject matter of the commission’s investigations.

The Attorney General said it is for this reason alone that he ordered that any prosecution of Sugri should cease but indicated that if it is established that suspect was allegedly involved in the murder of the Ya Naa, the country will know that no measures will be allowed to stand in the way of Justice.
