The Adentan Municipal Assembly has started dredging and desilting of major drains to forestall flooding and other disasters in the Municipality with the onset of the rains.

This came to light when Mr D.A. Nii-Noi Adumuah, the Municipal Chief Executive, led a technical team of the Assembly including Mr S.Y. Akoto, Works Engineer, Mr Emmanuel Salifu, Urban Roads Engineer, Mr Akwasi Owusu, Physical Planning Officer, and the media to inspect work on flood-prone areas.

Some of the areas visited are Amrahia New Town Zongo, Prison Junction, Frafraha and Animal Research Commando.

There were visible dredging, desilting and other works ongoing to create courses for the free-flow of rain water in all the areas visited.

Mr Adumuah said the Assembly had always adopted proactive measures to solve the perennial problem, hence the exercise to forestall any unfortunate situation.

He urged the leadership of the Community Sanitation and Residents Association to educate the members to desist from dumping refuse in the drains and avoid building on waterways.

“Though building on waterways are not uncommon to us, that of Adentan appears to be prominent,” Mr Adumuah said, adding that the Assembly would take legal action by demolishing all structures on waterways to allow free flow of water.

The MCE called on the media to support the Assembly in educating residents on the regulations concerning building and environmental sanity.

The situation, he said, has persisted because people continued to acquire land illegally without using the right procedure.

He advised the public to go to the Town and Country Planning Department of the Assembly for the necessary permit before they undertake development projects.
