‘Be wary of another Great Alliance’ -Faustina Nelson

MADAM Faustina Nelson, a Vice Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged genuine and committed Nkrumaists to rise up in defence of the great Convention People’s Party (CPP) tradition and legacy by preventing it from being sold to its avowed opponents by a few of its leaders.

“For this reason, the rank and file of the CPP and other Nkrumaists parties should seriously weigh the implications of the hasty, ill-considered and empty call on Nkrumaists to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer in the presidential run-off and accordingly ignore the calls,” she stressed.

In a statement on the run-off issued in Accra at the weekend, she pointed out that “it is sad that some few leaders of the CPP appear to have short memories and have suddenly forgotten the humiliations and raw deal that Nkrumaists in the erstwhile People’s Convention Party (PCP) suffered from the NPP under the Great Alliance in the run-up to the 1996 elections”.

Madam Nelson, who was then the National Women’s Organiser of the PCP and National Executive Committee (NEC) member, said the huge defections of Nkrumaists from the PCP to the NDC during the period was prompted by the looming prospect of their humiliation and sidelining in the Great Alliance by the NPP.

“All those Nkrumaists who defected to the NDC in 1996 were, as events later showed, completely vindicated by the series of humiliations and nasty actions unleashed on them by the NPP under the aegis of the Great Alliance”, she stressed.

She expressed regret that at a time they should have known better, some CPP leaders have joined the NPP to scheme to take undue advantage of Nkrumaists only to stab them in the back once again,” she noted.

She urged Nkrumaists to be guided by those painful past lessons under the ill-fated Great Alliance and treat with contempt the calls by some of their leaders to rally behind Mr Kufuor.

“Instead, Nkrumaists must vote massively for Professor Atta Mills, who himself is a committed colleague Nkrumaist, a family man, a man of honesty, integrity and impeccable academic and intellectual credentials and one who has proven by words and deeds that he has a grasp of the issues concerning the nation and is thus the best presidential material for the nation now”, he contended.

Madam Nelson also called on the members of the Young Traders Association (YTA) which is affiliated to the Veranda Boys and Girls Club, an Nkrumaist grouping of which she is National Chairperson, to come out in their numbers and vote for Professor Mills so that opportunities opened to them by the NDC Government to carry on with their businesses would be further enhanced.
