UG: ‘SRC General Assembly members not working in students’ interest’ – Dean of Students

The Dean of Students’ Affairs of the University of Ghana, Professor Godfred Alufar Bokpin has stated that members of the SRC General Assembly have brushed off their duty to serve the interests of the students.

He indicated that members of the Assembly have lost focus as they have resorted to following dictates from their political masters, making them disregard their core mandates.

“I have not approved any allowance for any of them including GA members because they are not working in the interest of the students. They are working to build their political career along the two main political parties. This is what they have reduced GA to and that is why they are in GA meeting and people will be calling them from town and telling them what to do and what not to do,” he unequivocally said.

For Prof. Bokpin, the appointment of the interim SRC executives, although is guaranteed by the SRC Constitution, an online electioneering process would have been far-off better.

According to him, he suggested the idea of online election to the SRC but they rejected it, on the basis that the student body would not trust the process.

“The constitution allows for the appointment of interim executives but I first proposed the idea of online election. Both the clerk, the SRC executive and the speaker said it cannot be because the students don’t trust it and said no let’s start off from this way.”

Moreover, “I contacted the UGCS because we know all the students that they can help develop the online platform where they told me that they can’t rely on that.”

The Executive Committee (ExeComm) of the University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) has appointed new executives to head the affairs of the student body for the time being.

This follows the failure of the SRC to hold elections to elect new principal officers for the 2020/2021 academic year.

JCR President for the Akuafo Hall, Nana Amo Ntow Fianko was appointed as the interim SRC President, whereas Secretary for the Mensah Sarbah Hall JCR, Rubby Nkansah was also appointed as acting SRC General Secretary.

Executives are yet to be appointed to occupy the positions of treasurer and women commissioner.
