The Ministry of Agriculture has banned the movement of pigs and pig products in the Central region following an outbreak of swine fever in the region.
The development comes weeks after thousands of birds were killed in several regions following an outbreak of bird flu.
A statement by Ministry stated “that due to the recent outbreaks of African Swine Fever (A.S.F) in the region, the Regional Veterinary Officer has placed a ban on movement of pigs and pig product within and out of the region till further notice, in order to effectively manage and control the disease.”
The statement added that by this “we wish to seek your support and also that of your Officers and men in the enforcement of this directive.”
Meanwhile, the Central regional Public Relations Officer DSP Irene Oppong has stated that the service is ready to assist the veterinary service to ward off fight of a possible spread of the disease in the country.
Police personnel at the boarders and various checkpoints according to the service have been mandated to conduct serious checks to prevent the movement of pork and its associated products in and out of the region.
