Drivers to take to the streets over bad nature of road

Drivers plying the Suhum Atiebu-Akomasi- Aposs road in the Suhum Municipality have threatened to demonstrate to draw attention to the bad nature of the road.

Mr Abdul Yusif, Secretary of the local branch of Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), made this known to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after an emergency meeting held by members of the union to discuss the condition of the road.

He said the road, which was constructed 20 years ago, was rehabilitated twice and that drivers plying the route and some members of the community used to organize communal labour to rehabilitate it.

Mr Yusif said the condition of the road had reached a stage that no amount of communal labour could rehabilitate it and no vehicle plies the route.

He said the people had to walk eight kilometers from Atiebu to Akwasi Komfo and Aposs daily to transact their businesses.

Mr Yusif alleged that during the night some people were attacked by criminals on the road and their monies, mobile phones and other personal belongings taken away whiles the women were raped. He said sometimes sick people were carried in wheel barrows from Akwasi Komfo and Aposs to Atiebu before boarding a vehicle to Suhum for medical care.

Mr Yusif said several appeals made to the Municipal Assembly, the Member of Parliament for the area and the assembly member had fallen on death ears.
