Parents admonished to show keen interest in education of Children

Parents in Upper East Region have been urged to take a keen interest in the education of their children as it was the best investment for their future.

The Chief of Yorogo , Naba Johnson Awuni, said this during this year’s celebration of the “Noyeni Maltenga” festival, an event celebrated by the chiefs and people of Yorogo-Tingre in the Bolgatanga Municipal.

The Chief said due to the erratic rainfall pattern in the region coupled with one rainy season, and the infertile nature of the soil it was very difficult for people to maximize profit from farming and appealed to parents to focus more on their children’s education.

He urged parents who often indulged in lavish expenses on social occasions such as drinking and other related activities, to reduce such acts and save money for the education of their wards.

He also commended the Assemblyman for the area, Mr Solomon Akakeya, for initiating the festival and bringing more development projects including Community Health based planning Centres, feeder roads, canvassing for scholarships from NGOs and the Member of Parliament for the needy but brilliant students.

The Chief also appealed to the Bolgatanga District Assembly and the Member of Parliament in the area to endeavour to provide the community with a befitting class room for a Junior High School (JHS) as the present structure was hampering academic work.

In a speech read for the Assemblyman, he assured the community that he was lobbying to ensure that the area received a fair share of the national cake and noted that the current ongoing electricity project which they are part was a clear testimony of that effort.

The Presiding Member of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, Mr John Nyaba who represented the District Chief Executive, Mr Edward Ayagle, assured the community members that beginning from January this year the Assembly would provide them with a befitting school for JHS.

He appealed to them not to feel reluctant to provide communal labour for the project when the Assembly begins the process of the building.

The theme for the occasion which was “Fighting poverty through Education” attracted a lot of people from all walks of life who were treated to cultural drumming, singing and dancing.
