'Ghost teachers' appeal to Mahama to restore names

Some teachers in the Northern region are appealing to President John Mahama to restore their names in the teachers pay register.

Over 300 teachers were allegedly removed from the register in July this year after a review by the Internal Audit Unit of the Ghana Education Service to eliminate ghost names from the pay roll.

But the teachers say they were registered during the audit period and do not see why they their names should be in the potential ghost names list.

Two of them who pleaded anonymity in an interview with XYZ News, said it is strange for their names to be in the ghost list when they are recognized teachers who were legally registered.

“We don’t understand why you will do an exercise to remove ghost when actually we are not ghosts. In the exercise it is confirmed that we are still here teaching.

“When we went to the metro education unit to find out the best they could do was to give us pieces of paper to write our names. We went to the controller and they said we should check at report 11, we checked and our names were not there”.**
