Many houses in New Juaben have no toilet facilities

Many houses in the New Juaben Municipality have no toilet facilities and this has resulted in long queues at public toilets in the municipality.

The most affected areas are Srodae, Betom, Asokore, Nsukwao, Effiduase and Oyoko .

A survey conducted by the Health Directorate of the municipality revealed that, only 54% of houses in the municipality have toilet facilities.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Alex Asamoah, told the GNA in an interview that, houses that lacked toilet facilities were old buildings and toilet facilities were not factored into their plan.

He said the assembly, in an attempt to address the problem implemented a policy of giving between GH¢100 and GH¢150 to those households to construct toilet facilities but it did not work.

He said the policy did not work because the design of the buildings did not allow any space that would enable the cesspit emptier space for the houses to dislodge the cesspit.

Mr. Asamoah said as a result, the assembly was alert in ensuring that new houses had provision for toilet facilities before the landlords were granted permit to build them.

The Municipal Environmental Officer, Mr. David Bechesandi, said the situation was so bad that the environmental department had no option than to recommend more public toilets in areas where there were no space to contain water closet facilities.

He said despite the policy of having toilet facilities in building plans, many people had moved into their uncompleted buildings without toilet facilities even though it was captured in their plan.**
