Winneba fishermen receive outboard motors

Winneba (C/R), Feb. 29, GNA - The Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Nii Ephraim, has urged the youth to register with the Local Enterprise and Skills Development (LESDEP) to enable them to better their lot.

Nii Ephraim made the call when presenting six Yamaha Outboard Motors to some fishermen in Winneba, who have registered under LESDEP.

According to him, sometime last year, 26 Yamaha outboard motors were distributed to other fishermen in the Municipality, and that plans are far advance for the government to introduce fibre boats for fishermen to replace the wooden canoes, which were becoming hard to come by following the destruction of the forests.

Mr Godwin Sowah, Central Regional LESDEP Coordinator, said 1,790 people had been trained by LESDEP in several vocations, including Hair Dressing, Dressmaking and Transport Operations in the Region, with 130 coming from the Effutu Municipality.

He said the LESDEP Programme is to benefit all Ghanaians, irrespective of one’s ethnicity, religious or political affiliations and that it was not true that the programme is only for NDC members.

The Very Reverend Eldad Bonney, Presiding Member of the Effutu Assembly, said the government deserved commendation for the numerous developmental programmes it had undertaken to improve the lot of the people.

He mentioned road infrastructure, construction of school buildings, expansion of electricity and water to the rural area as examples.

The Presiding Member advised parents to stop spending monies on funeral cloths, expensive funerals and litigations but rather invest it in their children’s education.

Neenyi Moni Kako, Chief Fisherman of the area, thanked the government, the MP and the Municipal Assembly for the outboard motors and other supports given to the fishermen.
