Kontonho (Ash), Jan 24, GNA - A farmer at Kontonho near Kofiase in the Asante-Mampong municipality, Opanin Yaw Dente, has appealed to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to form functional fire volunteer squads in all farming communities to check wildfires.
He said this has become more necessary given the severity of this year's harmattan.
Making the appeal to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Opanin Dente, said these volunteers should be equipped with fire fighting skills to respond to fire emergencies.
He called for the intensification of anti-wildfire campaign especially the handling of naked fires.
The farmer said the havoc wildfire caused to the nation's economy in 1983 should never be forgotten.
Opanin Dente asked the people to avoid the unorthodox practice of setting fire to the bush for game.
The district assemblies should also ensure rigid enforcement of their bye-laws on the environment.
He also called for the rehabilitation of the Mampong-Sekyedumase road to facilitate the transportation of people and foodstuffs to marketing centres.
