UEW institutes scholarship scheme for rural talented students

Winneba (C/R), Sept. 9, GNA- The Vice Chancellors Rural Scholarship Scheme (VCRSS) of the University of Education Winneba, (UEW) has targeted to raise GH=A21 million (10 billion cedis) to be invested in talented students in rural communities to enable them to access tertiary education.

The out-going Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Jophus Anamuah-Mensah who announced this at the 12th congregation of the University, appealed to philanthropists, Insurance Companies, banks and individuals to contribute to the scheme.

A total of 2,600 students graduated and were awarded with certificates ranging from diplomas to masters. A total of 13 students received post-graduate diploma in education while 44 received master of philosophy in education. Professor Anamuah-Mensah said the University has started a number of Master of Art and Master of Philosophy programme for the training of teachers in various teaching subjects. He said the University recognizes the important role Science, Mathematics and Technology play in education, and that 274 graduates in those areas passed out this year, an increase over last years figure. The VC urged the graduates to go to the "corner of this country as ambassadors of UEW and take away the darkness of ignorance and bring about an explosion of knowledge".

As ambassadors, you have the responsibility to inculcate into the children and students a sense of patriotism and citizenship, he said. 9 Sept. 07
