Community radio to educate people on saving

Dormaa-Ahenkro (B/A), Aug. 20, GNA - A community radio station in Dormaa-Ahenkro-Ahenkro is to embark on a literacy education programme on finance in the two the Dormaa districts to enhance the habit of saving and borrowing among the people. The programme, which is billed to begin in September, will run through the first half of 2010 and will also be aired on Radio Progress in Upper West Region, Royals Radio in Wenchi and Simile Radio in the Northern Region.

Mr. Fiifi Ofosu-Okyere, Director of the community radio, said this when he took 12 participants through a one-day workshop to prepare them for a two-day participatory baseline research in some communities in the two districts.

The research is to help ascertain the level of experience and perception of community members in relation to saving and borrowing. The baseline research will also determine factors that build institutional trust particularly in financial institutions in the communities. Three organisations, the German Technical Organisation, SPEED and the Ghana Community Radio Network (GCRN) will jointly provide facilitation and sponsorship for the broadcast series. 20 Aug 09
