The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sunday afternoon addressed issues regarding galamsey at a press conference in the Central Region right on the banks of polluted River Pra in what is reminiscent of the often-mocked lectern addresses of Security Analyst Alhaji Irbard Ibrahim.

Irbard became more famous recently by carrying his infamous lectern to the various places including Seashores, PDS Headquarters in Accra, SSNIT office, University of Ghana campus among many areas where their issues were up for discussion. Irbard delivered his first “address to the nation” from the venue of the alleged coup plot late in September last year.

“Even a pillow can be used for a coup d’état by smothering the President. Don’t expect Tomahawk Cruise Missiles for a coup. And no weapon is too basic,” Alhaji Ibrahim argued in a Facebook video months ago.

The NDC organized its national, regional and constituency executives to tour the area affected by illegal mining popularly called galamsey and saw the polluted state of the River Pra with journalists following. The NDC then mounted a podium right in front of the river where its Communications Director, Sammy Gyamfi addressed media persons.

They among other things, demanded accountability from the President over some seized equipment, allegedly being used by illegal miners for galamsey.

Remove Akufo-Addo as SDG Co-Chair

From the banks of River Pra, the NDC called on President Akufo-Addo to step down as the co-chair of UN SDGs advocates over his failure to fight against illegal mining evident by the colour of the river.

According to Sammy Gyamfi, Akufo-Addo is unfit for the prestigious position as members of his government have become promoters of “galamsey”. “Akufo-Addo has failed to show a genuine commitment to the fight against illegal mining and the protection of the environment in his own backyard. His corrupt government has become an active enabler and promoter of the “galamsey” menace and the destruction of the environment in a way that affronts the SDGs of the United Nations. He has proven to be unfit for the prestigious position of Co-Chair of the UN SDGs Advocates, for which reason he must be removed without delay. And, we are absolutely convinced beyond doubt that the United Nations will act in the interest of the Ghanaian people, the international community and the environment,” he said.
