Exhibition of voters register needs more education – Residents urge EC

Prospective voters at Gloryland near Odorkor, have called on the Electoral Commission to intensify education on the ongoing exhibition of the biometric voters register.

The 10-day exercise will afford registered voters the opportunity to verify their names and other details to enable them become eligible to vote in the upcoming December presidential and parliamentary polls.

Mr. Isaac Arthur, a voter at an exhibition centre-Gloryland told the Ghana News Agency in Accra at the weekend that he was not aware of the ongoing exhibition exercise.

He said perhaps the education on the exercise was low and much awareness needed to be created.

“I was passing by today when I saw the exhibition officer at the centre, before I got to know that there is something going on,” he said.

Ms Yvonne Mintah, a student, said she got to know of the ongoing exercise when she was going to church this morning.

She, therefore, urged other prospective voters to take the opportunity to verify their details to avoid disappointments on the day of election.

Mr. Kojo Tetteh Aidoo, the Exhibition Officer at the centre said the first day recorded about 168 people who came to verify their details. As at 1200 noon on the second day, the centre had recorded 50 voters.

Common mistakes on peoples’ voter cards at the centre were wrong ages and spellings of names.

Mr. Aidoo also believed most people were not going to the centres because they were not aware.

Various political parties have assigned their polling agents to be at the centers to monitor the exercise.

The exercise is taking place simultaneously at all polling centres across the country.
