Woman arrested for attempting double registration

Linda Nokoe, 48, is in the grips of the Takoradi police for attempting to register twice in the ongoing biometric registration exercise.

The Takoradi District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police Huseini Adwinaba confirmed the story to the Ghana News Agency in Takoradi on Monday.

He said the suspect went to Alhaji Bawa Registration Centre in Effiakuma, near Takoradi, to register because she claimed she had lost her new voters' identity card.

DSP Adwinaba said, after going through the registration process and was about to take a photograph, the registration officer saw her voter’s identity receipt issued to her during the first registration about two weeks ago at a different registration centre.

The Police commander said the registration officer advised her to go to the Electoral Commission office in Sekondi for replacement instead of registering again.

He said the political party representatives at the centre did not accept the suggestion offered by the registration officer, and they arrested Nokoe and handed her over to the Takoradi Central Police Station.

DSP Adwinaba said the police would investigate whether the woman attempted to register twice intentionally or it was out of ignorance.

Meanwhile, the police had released her on bail while investigation continued.**
