Exhibition of voters register successful in rural areas

Sekondi, July 31, GNA - Turn out during the exhibition of voters register was higher in rural areas in the Western Region than in the urban areas, Mr Stephen Opoku-Mensah, Regional Director of Electoral Commission said on Monday.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sekondi, said in rural communities like Asankrangwa in the Wassa Amenfi West District an average of 50 people visited the exhibition centres in the area every day.

He said about 300 people went to the exhibition centre at Supomu Dunkwa in the Shama-Ahanta East Metropolis in one day to check to check their names. Mr Opoku-Mensah said the turn out in urban areas in the Metropolis were low because many of the registered voters were students who were on vacation or have completed their education and no longer live in the area.

He said another reason for the low turn out was that many residents were involved in running their businesses.

Mr Opoku-Mensah said others were apathetic and felt that it is not compulsory to go to the exhibition centres to find out whether their names are in the voters register.
