Man jailed 12 years for attempted defilement

A 37-year-old unemployed who attempted to defile a 14-year-old student in a classroom at Kanda in Accra was on Tuesday sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court.

Omaru Wahab, charged with attempt to commit crime to wit defilement, pleaded guilty.

The court presided over by Ms. Sedina Agbemava convicted Wahab on his own plea.

Prosecuting Detective Inspector Kofi Atimbire told the court that the victim’s mother was the complainant. The victim and her mother reside at Kanda Accra while Wahab resides at Nima.

At about 0535 hours on March 26, the victim went to school at Kanda and saw Wahab covered with a cloth at the school gate.

Prosecution said Wahab called the victim, but she did not mind him and proceeded to the school compound.

When the victim opened the classrooms, Wahab quickly sneaked into one of the classrooms which was close to the school gate, stripped himself naked and hid behind the door.

After opening the classrooms, the victim entered the class six classroom to put the padlocks down.

Prosecution said immediately the victim entered the classroom where Wahab was hiding and seeing him naked she run out of the classroom, but Wahab pulled her and attempted to defile her.

The victim, whose uniform got torn, shouted for help and a security man rushed to the scene.

Wahab, sensing danger, took to his heels but was apprehended by passers-by and was sent to the Nima Police station.

The matter was, therefore, referred to the Domestic Violence and Victim’s Support Unit, Accra.
